The Temple - Hebrew Benevolent Congregation
Atlanta, Georgia

Photo of Sanctuary of The Temple, in Atlanta, Georgia

One of America’s most famous religious institutions, and supporters of social justice, The Temple – Hebrew Benevolent Congregation was founded in 1867. They played a momentous role during the strife of the civil rights movement, which is well-documented in The Temple Bombing by Melissa Fay Green, and depicted in the film Driving Miss Daisy. Their original pipe organ was built by the Pilcher Company in 1930 in conjunction with the completion of The Temple. In 1954-1955 the stature and prominence of this important instrument was cemented when Emilie Spivey engaged Virgil Fox and G. Donald Harrison to tonally redesign the organ. Under the direction of these luminaries, the Aeolian-Skinner firm rebuilt the organ, with significant additions and tonal restructuring. This instrument stands as one of the last to bear the signature plate of Harrison, who would pass away the year following its completion. The A. E. Schlueter firm is privileged to have been commissioned to restore this important instrument, which remains tonally unaltered.
