Four Manuals, Ninety-Two Ranks

The credit for the success of the organ at Morehouse College rests with Dr. Wendell P. Whalum, Sr. It was through his insistence and tireless effort that Morehouse College, his alma mater, acquired this instrument. Dr. Whalum described the organ he envisioned as: "...to honor the college with an instrument that would attract the world's greatest organists." Installed in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel which seats over 2,500, the organ enriches the music education of Morehouse students, as well as the community.

The instrument, which Arthur E. Schlueter, Jr. was involved with planning, designing and installing, features a 38-foot-wide facade with an exposed 32' Principal and 8' copper Trompette en Chamade. It was fabricated in its entirety by the Wicks Pipe Organ Co. of Highland, IL. At the time of it's completion, it was one of the largest organs in the South, and the second largest in Atlanta.

For over 20 years Arthur E. Schlueter, Jr. and A. E. Schlueter Pipe Organ Company have been the curators responsible for this 4-manual 92-rank instrument. The ongoing process of keeping this magnificent instrument operational has included: tonal refinishing, rebuild of console and chamber relays with solid state, rebuild of the winding system, restoration following repeated storm events which resulted in water and lightning damage, and design and installation of a protective "ceiling" over the chambers.
